We have digitized all the entries as published in al-Safar al-Mufid (Dr. Abdou’s Travels). You can now search this directory below by either selecting one of the drop-down criteria, or typing in the other fields. To preserve its value as a primary historical source, we have entered the data exactly as it appears in the book; this means there may be misspellings or seemingly mismatched transliterations between the names as they were rendered in Arabic and Latin alphabet. 

• Please note that if you enter values in two or more fields you might not retrieve any results. For example if you select "Female" for gender and "Haiti" for country, you will retrieve zero results because Abdou did not record any businesswomen working in Haiti.

• You can search records in Arabic or English and the search term can be first name, last name, country of origin, town/city/village of origin, town/city of migration.

• You can also filter by category such as country, occupation, etc.

• You can list the records that you searched for and also see visualization of the data by clicking on "Patterns."

• Finally, while the database contains close to 7,400 records, not every record will have data for each criteria. For example, only 30 percent of the records have an entry for "Origin Country."
